Why Consistent Remote Team Building Outperforms One-Off Events

If you’ve ever hosted a virtual game or team building session, you’ve probably felt the burst of fun, some laughter, maybe even a short-lived boost in morale.

And then… everything goes back to normal.

It’s not that these events don’t help, they just don’t last. As nice as it would be to say it, a strong remote team culture isn’t built in one afternoon

And unfortunately, without this essential culture in remote teams, employees can feel isolated and we’ve seen that this leads to high employee churn in remote roles.

So, as the builders of the first platform designed for consistent remote team building, we decided this week to take a deep dive into why we believe culture building must be consistent in the remote era, and how it can help your teams.

The Problem with One-Off Events

Virtual team building often looks like this: one big activity every few months: maybe a trivia night, a scavenger hunt, or a “fun Friday” quiz.

The intention is good, but the impact rarely sticks.

Why?

Because relationships, trust, and collaboration grow through repetition, not isolated events.

A great example: Who has ever gone to the gym once every couple of months and seen real results from it?

In order to make change in any area, you need consistency. Yet with the mountain of priorities teams already face, culture can be pushed to the background, or even forgotten about. Yet when you look at the costs companies are facing due to low employee engagement and high churn, it makes sense to start taking remote culture seriously.

Why Consistency Wins

1. It builds habits, not just memories. When teams interact regularly in low-pressure, playful ways, they start to form natural communication habits. People open up more, misunderstandings decrease, and collaboration becomes smoother. Teams look forward to these regular sessions of play and banter, and it rewires their perspective on the company as a whole.

2. You uncover real insights over time. One event can’t show you much about your team’s dynamics. But when play happens consistently, patterns appear.. Who leads, who listens, which teams do better at which challenges? Through consistency this data compounds, and develops key insights that create real opportunities for growth.

3. It strengthens culture in the long run. Culture isn’t built during special events or one-off quizzes, it’s built in everyday moments. Quick coffee breaks, informal chats, shared laughs: These were all natural culture builders in the office, but in a remote setting, smarter methods have to be implemented. A consistent rhythm of shared play is the key. It breaks through the remote barrier and encourages natural laughs and bonding over a short time period, keeping remote teams connected and engaged without having to take up lots of valuable time.

How to Start Small

You don’t need a massive budget or hours of planning to keep your team connected. The key is picking consistency over anything else. Don’t look for games or activities that are hard to replicate, or ones that take up a lot of time to organise. Keep it simple and make sure it’s fun, the rest will work from there.

Start with short, meaningful moments:

  • A quick game before your weekly meeting - You can go for something like 2 Truths, 1 Lie, or Guess the Sketch. Easy to do online, and available in seconds on Teem Camp.

  • A ten-minute challenge at the end of the day - This is a great one to get everyone feeling connected and happy to finish off the day. It also replaces the typical end-of-day chats you would have had in person. We have several 10-minute games on Teem Camp

  • A fun quiz every Friday - Quizzes are a classic! Everyone knows the rules and it can bring a lighthearted tone to the end of the week, instead of trying to force an in-person style social onto a zoom meet, like “virtual drinks”. A quiz can be as easy or as difficult to set up as you like, but for the purpose of consistency we recommend going for the easiest and quickest route possible. We have our own Trivia Quiz available on Teem Camp, which you and your team can play straight away once you are on the platform.

Reminder: The goal isn’t just to play, it’s to stay connected. And connection needs consistency.
